Alamogordo Achievements

Keep Alamogordo Beautiful

Josh Sides has a mission, and that’s to Keep Alamogordo Beautiful. In fact, that’s the name of the program he heads up for the city. Funded by the New Mexico Clean and Beautiful Grant from the New Mexico Department of Tourism, Keep Alamogordo Beautiful is part of the Keep America Beautiful program, who’s mission is “to inspire and educate people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment.”

Josh started working as a beautification worker for Keep Alamogordo Beautiful when he was just 14 years old. Born and raised in Alamogordo, this program has special meaning to Josh. “It is a blast to see positive changes in the community. I enjoy being able to help give back to the community through Keep Alamogordo Beautiful.”

The local Alamogordo program’s mission is to keep Alamogordo beautiful through weed eradication, litter eradication, graffiti eradication, recycling, and education. Josh, the only paid employee of the program, relies on the hard work of many volunteers to execute that mission. This year alone, over 200 people have volunteered!

The main focus for 2019 has been litter eradication and clean up after big events such as Easter in the Park, Sounds of Freedom Day, Danny Cordova Benefit Concert, Golden Gears Car Show, Fourth Friday’s, 4th of July Parade, the Great American Cleanup, and Play for James fastpitch tournament. The program provides trash cans, trash collection, and major man power for events like these.

Graffiti eradication is also a big part of the program, which offers graffiti clean up, free of charge, for our community. Josh loves his position because, as he puts it, “Keep Alamogordo Beautiful is a program where the only thing holding it back is the creativity and drive of the program coordinator. Being able to come up with ideas to get people involved with the program all the way to completion of the idea is a lot of fun for me.”

From large litter eradication like cleaning up after events, to smaller projects, like distributing cigarette butt collection containers to the historic district on New York Ave, Keep Alamogordo Beautiful has had a big impact on cleaning up our city. We can’t wait to see all the amazing ways Josh and his team of volunteers find to continue cleaning, beautifying, and getting the local community excited about improving Alamogordo!
